Ash splint basketry is traditionally carried out in the US and Steve learnt how to make these baskets with April Stone-Dahl, an Ojibwe craftswoman from Wisconsin. An ash log is pounded to separate the individual growth ring layers which are woven into lightweight, elegant and strong baskets. Steve will tell you about the pounding process and will show a short video but please note that this workshop uses splints already harvested by Steve; you are not expected to spend a lot of time with a log & mallet outside. You will learn how to grade and prepare the splints ready for weaving and the necessary skills to work with the ash splints to make a practical and beautiful table basket. Suitable for beginners.
The price includes all refreshments and lunch both days.
This was a new workshop in 2021 at Broadrake and with ash being a dominant species in the Yorkshire Dales it seems appropriate to run this heritage craft here.
