Organic willow is included in the price and all the tools required will be provided. Phil will guide the group through all the processes to make sure that everyone masters the traditional skills needed to craft their own piece of sculpture to take home at the end of the day.

This sculptural willow workshop is our most popular workshop; the Curlew is a lovely iconic Yorkshire Dales bird that breeds in neighbouring fields around Broadrake and often flies over our site with it’s lovely evocative call.
Broadrake will be making a donation equal to the price of a workshop place to Curlew Action which is actively working to protect this Red listed bird. We are also hosting a 2nd workshop for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Wild Ingleborough Project to raise awareness of Ground Nesting Birds in the Yorkshire Dales. Profits from their event will be used to support a weekend event to celebrate World Curlew Day on April 21st.
7th-8th September – Spoon Carving £190 (2 days)
9.45am – 4.30pm approx. Price includes materials lunch and refreshments.
Please wear layers of warm clothing and sturdy footwear.
Spoon carving takes whittling away bark from a branch to the next level, using an axe and just 2 different carving knives. Steve Tomlin will guide you safely, step-by-step, through the skills of this lovely craft to create unique utensils and spoons from a fresh cut log. This 2 day course is perfect for beginners and improvers alike. Safe axe work methods are taught to split and roughly shape the wood and different knife cuts are taught and demonstrated with the emphasis on safety. Starting with a simple kitchen utensil Steve will gauge the different skill levels and needs of individuals to allow refinement of technique and design variation.
For those of you who have already started out with this absorbing craft then this 2 day workshop will reinforce your axe skills and the knife carving techniques to shape and finish your spoons efficiently and confidently. You will all make a range of items to explore different design elements, including simple stirring spoons, spreaders and ‘cranked’ eating spoons. Part of the course will include looking at sharpening equipment and techniques to make sure your own axe and knives are kept sharp and safe.

This workshop is suitable for both complete beginners and improvers. Tools and greenwood are provided or bring your own tools if you have them. By the end of the 2 days, you will know how to axe & carve efficiently and safely, have a better understanding of carving the different grain patterns, and be able to consider spoon design.
This should give you the confidence to continue at home, to practise the skills and make more stirrers, spreaders & spoons. This absorbing and addictive craft will have you looking at every fallen tree branch and fresh cut log pile with spoon eyes!

Come and make a fantastic willow bag. Starting with a ready made rectangular base you will learn to weave your own shoulder bag or handbag, finished with leather handles.

Phil’s gentle, relaxed teaching style will guide you through the techniques needed to make an attractive and useful gathering basket. It is a new course for 2022 so we have no pictures yet.
This course is aimed at those with some previous experience of working with willow.
Phil lives in NW Cumbria where he grows his own sustainable willow for basket-making, garden structures and also bird sculptures, all popular workshop topics
